Sugar cane ethanol is produced from the same plant that makes everything we eat sweeter, and it's another biofuel that's gaining in popularity among those who are serious about finding ways to deal with our growing energy crisis. Sugar cane produces more ethanol per acre than corn does and requires less energy to produce, which means environmentalists consider sugar-cane ethanol a greener energy source than corn ethanol. Since sugar isn't a staple food like corn, it hasn't driven up global food prices like its corn based cousin has. Brazil, which produces nearly as much sugar-cane ethanol as the US produces Corn Ethanol, uses it for about half of the transportation fuel from plants while only using 1 percent of their arable land to grow it. The main problem is that Sugar cane only grows in warm, rainy climates, which makes it a limited option at providing a new global fuel source. If every part of the world was a tropical as Brazil, then sugar cane could provide a realistic solution for our energy crisis. As of now though, there are not enough places in the world that can grow enough sugar cane to produce enough sugarcane ethanol to really fix our oil shortage problems. I'm Elizabeth Chambers. I think sugarcane also takes longer to grow than corn.
