More and more garages all over the country are offering conversion services that can turn your hybrids into plug ins that can get up to 200 miles per gallon. The conversions involve the replacement of the Hybrid's battery with a lead acid or lithiun ion pack, and installing the proper electronics that enable the batteries to be charged from an ordinary wall socket. This is the same type of technology being developed by Chevy Volt and the new Toyota Prius. While those companies are a couple years away from a plug in, garages like the Advanced Vehicle Research Center in Raleigh, North Carolina or Luscious Garage in San Francisco, California can do the conversion for you. The conversion kits start at 5,000 dollars. That's probably why only 200 people throughout the country have converted their hybrids into plug ins so far, but for the people who have done it, it's about the environment and not about the money. The second generation Toyota Prius is the easiest car to convert, but the garages can convert Ford Escape hybrids or almost any car currently on the road for an extra fee. If you want to be the first person on your block to own a plug in electric, and you have the extra cash, call a conversion dealer today and impress all your friends. Or you can always wait two years and buy a plug in from Chevy or Toyota. I'm Elizabeth Chambers. Check back here for more eco friendly news and tips, right here on LivingGreenChannel.Com.
