California's Proposition 7 would become one of the most aggressively eco friendly laws in the nation and would legally require California to meet some very high standards in renewable energy. Prop 7 would require that half of California's energy be produced by renewable resources by 2025. This would mean that in 17 years, production of energy in California from solar, wind, and other renewable resources would have to more than quadruple from their current annual output of 10.9 percent. Currently, investor owned utility companies in California, like Edison and PG and E, are required to provide 20 percent of their energy through renewables by 2010. Those who support Prop 7 argue that it would make California the world leader in clean power technology, create 370,000 new in the “green collar sector.” Opponents of Prop 7 argue that the measure would in fact cost Californians jobs and increase energy prices. If Prop 7 passes, it could hurtle California to the forefront of a new, green collar economy... but that's only if the bill's ambitious goals are actually met. You can learn more about Prop 7 and the rest of the propositions you'll be voting on on November 4th at www.votersguide.sos.ca.gov. I'm Elizabeth Chambers.
