If you want any more proof that going green has become hip and cool, then just look at the actions of the people who define hip and cool... rock stars. Some of the biggest names in rock and hip hop are making sure their tours are eco friendly this summer as they try to reduce their carbon footprints without sacrificing one bit of the rock. Leading the path, as always, are trendsetting Emmy winners Radiohead, who have retrofitted their tour buses and trucks to run on bio diesel and to switch to electric mode while idling during their “In Rainbows” tour this summer. Low energy LEDs light their stage show, their merchandise is being manufactured with orgaic cotton, and they're not even allowing disposable cups on the tour, instead issuing water flasks for their crew and opening acts to hydrate. They also are sticking to the US for only one leg of their tour, so see them while they're here, because they won't be back... flying is bad for the environment, after all. But Radiohead isn't the only act working to cut down on their environmental impact. Their fellow countrymen Coldplay have been tracking their carbon footprint for years, and plan on planting mango trees in poor parts of India to offset any damage they do during their tour their “Viva La Vida” tour this summer. Festivals are getting in on the green act as well... Baltimore's Virgin Mobile Fest, featuring Kanye West, The Foo Fighters, and the Nine Inch Nails will have “green angels” overseeing eco cleanup, making sure all trash is recycled, all food is shipped locally, and that everything built for the fest is made from sustainable materials, while the whole event will be solar powered. And the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, featuring Beck, Band of Horses, and Stone Temple Pilots will do its part with “hydration stations” aimed at cutting back on bottle water consumption, organic cotton merch, recycling bins everywhere you look, and an art show with an eco theme. Check out the official websites for all the acts and festivals listed above for more information, dates, and ticket prices, and get ready to rock out, green style.
